Today on AskAdria: Changing Jobs

Live today, Monday August 16th, 2010 – 5pm Pacific, 7pm Central, 8pm Eastern

News at AskAdria

Today’s show will be the last AskAdria…for a while

Just returned from BlogHer conference in NYC. It rocked! #blogher10

Heading to Gnomedex conference in Seattle this week. #gnomedex

Training for September’s Build Your Own WordPress Website is SOLD OUT

Fear of Changing Your Job

Sometimes people are in jobs they hate. Yet they stay. Why is this?

We’ve all heard the same excuses a thousand times before

No one is hiring now

What if I find a new job and it doesn’t work out?

I won’t find a job as good as this one with the benefits

I’m working full time and don’t have a chance to followup during the work week

I would love to move to XYZ but I don’t know where to start

I don’t know the first thing about so I have to stick to what I know

and so on.

There are millions of jobs out there right now and you can create your own from scratch.
Today I’ll talk about a few people I’ve encountered who have done just that.

GET OVER YOURSELF!

We’ll explore

Why people look for new jobs

Where to find the jobs

How to figure out what you want to do

Planning a move to another city

I also have an announcement that AskAdria will be taking a break from the weekly QnA to regroup.

Why people look for a new job

They hate their boss

They hate what they do

They hate their coworkers

They don’t feel they are properly compensated

They want to switch careers

Where to find jobs

Careerbuilder.com

Monster.com

Salary.com

Each state has job and salary database

Twitter

Networking events

Best way to start networking? Try Meetup.com to get practice

28 minutes

Do you print out directions when you go somewhere new?
Ever get frustrated that your sales people arrived late to a client site?

Well, take a look at picking up a TomTom GPS device that you can take with you to save time and reduce frustration when getting around town!

Today I’ll cover why I picked up a TomTom One 130 (Amazon link) even though I don’t own a car in San Francisco and how I plan to use it when renting a Zipcar, traveling out of state and to cut down on entering addresses multiple times on my computer, phone and navigation system. I paid just $59.99 for a refurbished model vs $89.99 and it is in perfect condition with a full 1 year warranty.

GPS stands for Global Positioning Service and in devices like the TomTom is has 3 parts:

The hardware

The software

The GPS unit

You input where you want to go and a voice with visual directions gets you there. I find the ability to choose the voices to be one of the most fun parts of using a GPS system. Something that was once frustrating becomes enjoyable.

TomTom isn’t the only game out there. Garmin is another popular brand. You can also use GPS on your smartphones but as I warn in the show, it’s a big battery drain. Also, these GPS devices last a week without recharging vs your standard iPhone 3GS which doesn’t even last a day. I owned a TomTom a few years ago and just loved it!

s0l_uk: it can be a drain on bettery…
Phyllis: I have my droid hooked up in the car with a line going into the lighter to keep it charged – but yeah – that would be an issue if not plugged in
Keith: michael scott would be a perfect voice
Keith: or moss from IT Crowd
Phyllis: I do wish I could change the voice on the droid gps – guess that would be a google maps voice?
s0l_uk: lol Keith
Phyllis: lattitude does that in droid – sorry – I really like my droid lol
s0l_uk: Nokia + Google have free GPS updates..
Phyllis: again – love the droid – and the gps is awesome
Bruce: Off to see the Wizard…bye, bye
s0l_uk: A-GPS uses your servers on your mobile network to work out your location. Network GPS uses the tower locations to work out your position both are slower than real GPS

Today’s show is on your different option for microphones when doing a video for the Internet. I’ll share my usb desktop microphones, my wireless headset and lapel mic, all which are great options!

The Demand For Internet video

We humans have a history of sitting around fires, chatting. This means we like to see other humans and hear them too. Remember in the old days of the internet where people would pass around tiny video clips via email? These links would make the rounds at the office, “Did you see the video yet? It’s hilarious!” and so on.

YouTube was founded in 2005 and made it easy for anyone to publish a video to the internet. It removed all the complicated portions and had a big ole upload button.

The power of video has come the Internet. With 92% of Americans having internet access in their homes, the ability to watch video, and the demand for it keeps going up.

The Hardware

Hands Free microphones are great so you can do your web show and not get distracted by cords. I often get up during my show to grab stuff for the audience and it would be a hassle to “unhook” first.

Review: I love this microphone! I picked it up over the winter because I wanted deeper sound and the ability to do audio on my macbook. After going to Blogworld and spending some time at the booth where they had some audio equipment, I knew I needed to step up my game. This condenser mic comes with it’s own stand but you could put it in a desk mount swing arm (I may do this) as well. I’m also considering getting a windscreen for it.

Review: I love, love, love this headset! I picked this up last year so I could talk on my Skype calls but walk around the house. It streams all audio so you can also listen to your movies or music too. Very convienent, nice quality feel to the ear pieces and people say I sound clear. Works good until about 30 feet. Battery life is about 5 hours which is plenty of talk time for me!

HAvana: She is such a sweet person
s0l_uk mod: for me it was her Blog post about the GOP candidates website “hack”
Retrospect: Yep :-)
HAvana: Yeah!
Beach_Baby: yes
jacqueb: hi all, i have a question :-)
s0l_uk mod: Hi Jacque ^_^
Sheefeni: The wonders of modern technology
jacqueb: decided to lose a huge waste of paper and need to doublecheck we backup Mitchell and Quickbooks every night
Beach_Baby: Not a good habit! Germs! :P
Retrospect: Can a virus by carried by a PDF or JPEG? Do they have “micros”?
HAvana: AAANY questions? Can we ask biz-related questions too?
s0l_uk mod: it’s Open Topic Ask away guys
Beach_Baby: Hows your roommates? I know im tired also! :)
HAvana: What is San Fran like?
s0l_uk mod: 21:45 AM here you think YOUR tired ^__^ lol
s0l_uk mod: 2:45 (not 21 >_<
jacqueb: going to recycle invoices and save about 250+ pieces of paper a month
HAvana: Damn, Bill LOL
Retrospect: scroll up- see question :-)
s0l_uk mod: Question from: Retrospect Can a virus by carried by a PDF or JPEG? Do they have “micros”?
s0l_uk mod: Idealy for backup’s have a second machine (somewhere else!) to restore backups onto to test the backups to see if they work…
jacqueb: database is fine. If Mitchell crashed I would not need paper to recreate. Great thanks
jacqueb: no rush
HAvana: I recently raised prices for my design packages ; how can I transition my marketing to reflect my “higher end” pricing?
s0l_uk mod: Retrospect there are reports of “flaws” in Adobe which *May* let a virus or exploit in
Retrospect: listens closely
HAvana: .png > .jpg :D
s0l_uk mod: png is diffrent than a jpg (png can hold a lot of “meta” or text info along with the picture
Retrospect: If I don’t recognize the file type, Jpeg, Tif, Jpg – I wont open it
HAvana: Same here
Retrospect: Thanks!
HAvana: ADVENTURE ~
HAvana: Wow!
s0l_uk mod: JP(e)G = Joint Pictiue Export Group PNG = Portable Network Group (if you ever wondered what they stood for…)
Retrospect: Mobile Adria – yah!!!
s0l_uk mod: Love the view!!!
HAvana: That looks so cool!
Retrospect: its beautiful!
Sheefeni: Looks gorgeous
Retrospect: I love “the city”
s0l_uk mod: that should be PNG = Portable Network *Graphic* (sorry)
HAvana: Wow .. a society of nerds ..
Retrospect: LOL blah blah hee hee
HAvana: HEALTHY nerds
HAvana: Sounds like paradise
jacqueb: no bugs!
Retrospect: honey is great substitute for sugar
s0l_uk mod: check setttings of your window OS to make sure it shows extentions ( the bits after teh “.” in the filenames! )
jacqueb: everyone was so nice in LA. only “unfriendly” was my Mpls cab driver!
HAvana: And cheap clients are assholes. :)
Retrospect: UVP- love that
s0l_uk mod: lol
jacqueb: charge for value served
s0l_uk mod: V.A.S = Value Added Service
HAvana: How do I convey “value”? Or how do I get my work in front of my newer “target market”? (i.e. higher ncome brackets)
Beach_Baby: I love snopes!
HAvana: Snopes ruins my dreams by demystifying friggin awesome stories.
Beach_Baby: My aunt forwards EVERYTHING and prints it out to save it…
jacqueb: Higher income brackets are “very” aware of value served as that is how probably got where they are
HAvana: Hahahah, nah, the “adventure” was in re: to the window scene
jacqueb: the premise of “the millionare next door”
s0l_uk mod: HAvana you might want to check out what your target market is reading or sites tehy visit to target marketing
jacqueb: My example is we found adria on craig’s list and her service was awesome and fair
Beach_Baby: no surgar in my coffee?! 0.o NO. lol
jacqueb: I hate “special” pricing on how people perceive me
s0l_uk mod: coffee + sugar + real full fat milk = Yummy!!
Beach_Baby: agreed s0l
s0l_uk mod: Jacque that show’s called “Secret Millionare” in the UK
HAvana: Good point – re: Paris Hilton example
jacqueb: sol, here there was a book about many millionaires are your next door neighbor but you probably don’t know it–they don’t flaunt it
Sheefeni: How do I convince people that my service is worth using, if there are so many free compeditors out there?
HAvana: LOL I like the impression …
s0l_uk mod: Sheefeni everyone has the same problems with clients / competitors… lol! talk to clients and see what they require and what you can offer them
jacqueb: Sheefeni, nothing is really free. Adria sold us when she had credentials, personality, fair price and not bill be me to learn on the job
jacqueb: No, we call it “summit avenue” pricing – charge 25% more based on where you live
HAvana: Adria, how the heck do you stay so skinny :P
jacqueb: so, they think you can afford it and sock it to us
jacqueb: they never get our business
s0l_uk mod: HAvana think it’s due to hyperactivity…. lol!! ^_^
HAvana: Haha
HAvana: i love Freelance Switch! <3
Sheefeni: I think that might be the most horrible bit of all. The customer base I’m looking at are probably the worst possible ones.
adria: http://freelanceswitch.com/clients/how-do-you-know-youre-working-with-a-bad-client/
HAvana: Thankies, Adria!
HAvana: Oh jeez, that sounds liek one of my clients right now
s0l_uk mod: lol
jacqueb: Sheefeni, why do you see them as worse possible ones?
s0l_uk mod: rich get rich by not spending money where ever possible….
s0l_uk mod: they are terrible for paying bills ^_^ lol
jacqueb: :P
Sheefeni: it’s primary anecdotal, but their mostly people in service industries who deal with customers in set time blocks
HAvana: Oy, I had one project that had 5 decisionmakers. WORST EXPERIENCE EVAR
s0l_uk mod: HAvana think the phrase “too many cooks” comes to mind…
Sheefeni: They have a tendency to lack technical sophistication and usually will go for a quick band-aid over a long term solution.
jacqueb: Sheefeni, true until they really have a terrible occurence and hopefully learn from it
s0l_uk mod: i used a goot speach for those types of people! “I can patch it and come back 20 times to pastch it again charging you $40 each visit OR i can do it right and only charge you $120″
s0l_uk mod: goot = good
HAvana: Damn. I need more ADD then. LOL
jacqueb: sol exacty! fair pricing for service rendered. If it can be fixed the first time, that is true value served
HAvana: Wtf, I would have never thought you smoked, Adria LOL
Sheefeni: As a tech person how do you introduce yourself without confusing people or loosing them in the first 3 seconds?
s0l_uk mod: unfortunatly it tuns out the peoiple that just want it “patched” tend to be the ones who are late paying invoices!! lol
HAvana: So true, Bill
s0l_uk mod: Sheefeni: that’s a hard thing to learn! how to talk non-tech to people is a skill!
s0l_uk mod: to be harsh, you have to think of clients as little kids and try and explain it to them…
jacqueb: sol, maybe a fair price for a patch, inform how maintenance can save $ in long run, will earn trust and long-term relationship
Sheefeni: Im starting to see that, I guess I just need more practice. It’s just when I try to explain things to people, their eyes glaze over.
HAvana: Haha, Shef: make explanations more interactive .. even if it’s just asking a yes/no question
Sheefeni: My issue is that I’m build SaaS, so usually the only interaction people get from me is from the copy on my page.
s0l_uk mod: i’ve done loads of phone tech support to people that “HATED” computers. you tend to get good at dumbing down hte tech speak…
jacqueb: Sheefeni, don’t know what your exact service is, but research your target audience or potential client and focus on how your service benefits them
jacqueb: 3 bullet points is good start
s0l_uk mod: froze?
HAvana: Nooo!
HAvana: Did it freeze?
HAvana: :[
s0l_uk mod: yup frozen!
HAvana: Oh boo
s0l_uk mod: lol crashed again >_<
jacqueb: the tech service reminds me of your neighor who can fix your car (but probably can’t) to your friend’s brother who fixes computers – need to educate people
Beach_Baby: i tried smoking when i was 12…i didn’t get the point. Never smoked again.
s0l_uk mod: http://askadria.com/archive/
Beach_Baby: smoking doesn’t kill you. My great grandmother is 94, has smoked since she was 13. Still smokes everyday. Shes doing great.
s0l_uk mod: i alway’s used “I.T. Support Officer” as my job title… the “Officer” bit tells the clients you take charge and control of the problem ^_~
HAvana: We are LOL
HAvana: And we ate some CHinese takeout too LOL
Sheefeni: Yup! We’re sitting across from each other.
Sheefeni: Speaking through the chat.
jacqueb: aw come on, I’m a client and feeling abused here ^_~
s0l_uk mod: you know you’re a geek when…. you email something to someone and then turn around and tell them you’ve emailed them….
HAvana: We’re nerdy lovebirds
s0l_uk mod: ^_^
jacqueb: people just need to follow adria’s example -
s0l_uk mod: Good show! great questions! ^_^
s0l_uk mod: Wee .. sunshine!!
HAvana: A cold summer …
Sheefeni: It’s beats the swamp heat!
HAvana: It sho’ does
HAvana: Awwwwww!!!!
s0l_uk mod: we;ve just had out summer :( lol 4 day’s of +20c temps in the UK dropping to the normal 13c later in the week!
HAvana: cute!
HAvana: Sol, I have no idea what Celsius is ;)
HAvana: Hahaha
jacqueb: today in St Paul it was 94 and humid as hell
s0l_uk mod: lol HAvana! i’m terrible at converting to f lol!!
HAvana: Hahah
Sheefeni: The lows around here are at like 30c
HAvana: Bye, Adria! :D <3
s0l_uk mod: u8rgh! 30c i’d be dead!!
Sheefeni: Bye, Adria. Thanks for talking with us!
Sheefeni: It’s pretty awful.
jacqueb: quick goodbye :`D
adria: Thanks folks for stopping in at a later show date
HAvana: HAha
s0l_uk mod: Thanks fro your questions guys! come back next week ^_^
HAvana: :D See ya Bill!
