Ever get frustrated that your sales people arrived late to a client site?

Well, take a look at picking up a TomTom GPS device that you can take with you to save time and reduce frustration when getting around town!

Today I’ll cover why I picked up a TomTom One 130 (Amazon link) even though I don’t own a car in San Francisco and how I plan to use it when renting a Zipcar, traveling out of state and to cut down on entering addresses multiple times on my computer, phone and navigation system. I paid just $59.99 for a refurbished model vs $89.99 and it is in perfect condition with a full 1 year warranty.

GPS stands for Global Positioning Service and in devices like the TomTom is has 3 parts:

• The hardware
• The software
• The GPS unit

You input where you want to go and a voice with visual directions gets you there. I find the ability to choose the voices to be one of the most fun parts of using a GPS system. Something that was once frustrating becomes enjoyable.

TomTom isn’t the only game out there. Garmin is another popular brand. You can also use GPS on your smartphones but as I warn in the show, it’s a big battery drain. Also, these GPS devices last a week without recharging vs your standard iPhone 3GS which doesn’t even last a day. I owned a TomTom a few years ago and just loved it!

Now while email is an important part of business, it doesn’t mean that everything can be solved within email.  If you imagine that email is the hammer, then every task can look like nail but often, there are more effective tools out there.  Here are a few examples:

1. Manage leads – CRM instead of email
   Salesforce, Highrise
2. Problem – Ticketing system instead of email
   Zendesk
3. Project – Project management software instead of email
   Basecamp
4. Ecommerce – shopping cart instead of email
   Volusion
5. Calendar – Calendaring software instead of email

Moving Your Email

Now that you’ve made the decision, how do you leave?  One of the first steps is to understand what you’re working with.  Just like weight loss, you need to know what you weigh and create a goal.  With email, the important things are:

• How many emails do you currently have
• How much space do they take up
• Do you use your email system to also manage your contacts?
  If so, how many contacts do you have?
• Do you manage an electronic calendar?
  If so, how many appointments do you have and how many appointments would you need to transfer?

When I start Google Apps migrations for people, these are the very first questions.  From there we discuss what their other needs are like checking their email on the road, email management and multiple accounts for other staff.

A very powerful tool I’ve discovered for moving email is called YippieMove.  It allows you to quickly and easily transfer email from one server to another.  They can transfer email from hundreds of different providers including AOL, Yahoo, GoDaddy, Gmail, 1&1 Mail and nearly 100 university email accounts.  Remember, some providers don’t offer IMAP (hosted email) for free so you may need to pay  before you could do a transfer.  I’ve used this to transfer email from hosting accounts on cPanel at Bluehost, moving the email into  a Google Apps account.

Today’s show is going to cover consumers and the iPad –  “iPad Users: Where Are They Now?”

Recently, I was at the Apple store to have my 13″ Macbook Pro repaired.  The hard drive died so I exercised my warranty to get it replaced.

Two events occurred while visiting the Apple store in San Francisco on 1 Stockton street which has lead to today’s topic:

1) Last Monday, iPads were flying off the shelves.  People were buying several per minute ahead of me and one guy, being stuck in the US due to the volcanic ash, was buying an iPad for a friend.

2) A woman at the Apple store came in with a problem.  She couldn’t seem to get online.  I couldn’t hear the location but wondered if she commuted on the Caltrain with the desire to whip out her iPad and surf.  Sadly, she was told she couldn’t get online unless she was connected to wifi.

Here is the current pricing for the iPad. A base model with 16GB starts at $499 with wireless only and at the at the high end $829 with wireless and 3G.  It will cost you about $130 more to get one with 3G.
I will be getting an iPad once the new version with 3G comes out end of April.

Customer Education of Technology Gadgets

That’s right.  This woman had spend $600 on a device that can’t get online without wireless.  If she had waited just one month, she could have purchased an iPad that had 3G built-in, allowing her to surf pretty much anywhere for a monthly fee of about $30.

One of my customers is doing just that.  Jacque, runs a successful family owned automotive repair shop in Minnesota and is an Apple fan.  In fact, the entire family is crazy about Apple.  They have Macbooks and iPhones with a rouge PC or smartphone in the hands of one or two family members but  overall would consider themselves a “Mac shop”.  Jacque is the one who got me looking into iPhone jailbreaking after she took her iPhone into a local cell phone shop and paid to have some “mysterious service” done to allow her iPhone to work on the T-mobile network.  She realized this wasn’t sustainable and was curious as to what was actually done.  Leave it to Adria to break down the complexity!  I’ve now jailbroken several phones for the Bona family as well as my own iPhones and made videos to help others do the same.

Seriously though, where are consumers supposed to find out information on all these new items coming out?  Many are impressed with television ads and big billboards promising techn0-heaven like productivity.  I was reading an article yesterday asking who could really work on an iPad and if so, what sort of job did they have?  Slacker?  Unemployed professional?

• Why is there this frenzy to buy half finished products?
• Are consumers being misled into technology purchases they later regret?
• How do you go about finding out if a new tech gadget is right for you?

When did the iPad go on sale?

I completed my first Google App migration in December of 2006.  It was a huge improvement for the client who had previously had Comcast for their email service.  Comcast “graciously” gave each user 2mb of inbox space and they had no shared calendering system.  After Google Apps was in place, they saw an immediate increase in productivity

We will be using the freely available jailbreaking software created by the iPhone Dev team for this jailbreak as usual. I know people have been asking about firmware version 4.0 but until the iPhone Dev Team (http://blog.iphone-dev.org) releases it, I consider it “not available”.
