It’s entirely possible to get a great, entry level job in IT with no previous experience! We will cover how to prepare for a new career in technology, where to find these jobs, how to update your resume and how to rock your interview!
While salaries can vary between cities and certainly between countries, it’s quite likely that you can land your first IT job at a rate of $8-$22/hr.
Tune in February 22nd, 2010 at 6:30pm Central on the AskAdria Live page and bring your questions!

Just came across your blog today, I'll be sure to tune in for your live streams in the future! One of my major beefs with the entire education system is how it does nothing to help students find that a-ha moment! Most students decide on a career path and pursue degrees never knowing if this is something they will enjoy much less be good at. I work with teachers and try to remind them how important it is to help students find their own individual passion. And I agree fully that when you are doing something you enjoy, you will excel at it. If you are a master electrician you will make a lot more than if you are a mediocre financial analyst. In every career path, there is a WIDE range in pay scale, so if you are doing something you are passionate about, you are more likely to be in the high range of that field. Anyway, you just reminded me about my own a-ha moment, which is why I might appear to be rambling excitedly. Thanks for bringing it back!

Colleen,
That's awesome! Yes, I wish there was more development in our educational
system as well to help people understand there is more than just being a
fireman, lawyer, doctor, teacher, professional sports star or musical
performer. There are so many interesting things behind the scenes of a
movie, so much cool science studying/analyzing/interacting with all sorts of
people/places/things and yes, don't even let me get started on all the great
and interesting things in IT.
Just look at all the new jobs in the last 10 years in IT including:
– php development
– ruby on rails development
– iphone app development
– VMWare
– cloud apps
– social media
and many of these have similarities to previous technologies. In fact,
there is still demand for COBOL developers and people who know the AS/400.
It's beautiful. Our careers often mimic the variety of nature.
I hope this video helps to illustrate the many possibilities in the world
for someone who wants to “get into IT”

Adria,
I appreciate the job-hunting advice, but I would really like to hear about your technical knowledge and how someone who hasn't worked in tech really gains the knowledge and experience they need to get there. I already know all the resume/interview stuff. I come here for tech.
I'll keep checking back.
